Q&A With Singer/Songwriter Genevieve Wolff
Online, June 29, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Hi G thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to introduce yourself and your music to our awesome audience.
What age did you first pick up a guitar?
I got my first guitar when I was about ten years old, but didn't really start taking it seriously until I turned fourteen. I took lessons off and on but quickly stopped when I realized that I could play by ear with the basics I had learned and that reading music wasn't necessary to play the songs I wanted to learn.
How would you describe your music?
Oh boy. I have the hardest time with this question. I think I sound somewhat folksy since most of what I write is acoustic. I grew up listening to punk rock so I like to think that leaks through sometimes, but I usually tell people I'm a folksy indie rocker.
What artists are on your iPod?
A lot of AFI, Ani Difranco, Dead Milkmen and John Frusciante, but also things like The Phantom of the Opera and Lil' Wayne so it can sound a little schizophrenic when it's on shuffle.
Who are your biggest influences?
John Frusciante is by far my favorite guitarist. His "To Record Only Water For Ten Days" release was instrumental in evoking the courage within myself to write and sing my own music. I adore Jawbreaker's chord progressions; they can sound chaotic and dissonant while maintaining melody and it creates a haunting feel for me.
What is one of the biggest challenges for new performers?
I can't speak for everyone, but my biggest challenge so far has been creating a fan base and getting my music out there without a promoter or manager. It's a stretch for me to sell myself because I am not very outgoing by nature, but it feels good to stretch regardless. With all the social media sites for musicians available now, it's definitely getting easier to network with people outside of my area, but also getting harder to remember all the passwords to the different pages I get to update.
Can you give us a link to one of your songs?
You can hear my music at: http://genevievewolff.com/
I know you don't have much free time but how do you relax?
Happy hour and a crossword puzzle.....oh, and remembering to breathe. I catch myself holding my breath quite a bit.
When/where is your next show?
I'm not booking anything until after July as I am in the process of recording some tracks for some Indie Folk compilations, but shows are always posted on my website, REVERBNATION and Facebook.
How can fans find you?
They can go to my website http://genevievewolff.com/ and get to all the social networking links from there or do you mean physically? I'm usually at my day job or the local pub, but I'm not going to tell you where I live if that's ok.
Where can we purchase your music?
You can buy my music here: http://www.reverbnation.com/store/artist_1572841
Thanks again and we wish you all the success in the future.....look for G's EP "Ouch"
