Queen To Queen, Inc. Hosts Leadership Conference For A Different Kind Of Student Leader
The Ladies in Waiting Conference prepares the next generation of HBCU Queens with fundamental tools for effective leadership
Online, October 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - On Nov. 17, Queen to Queen, Inc. will present the inaugural Ladies in Waiting Conference on the campus of Bowie State University with Dr. Avis Jones-DeWeever, executive director of the National Council of Negro Women, as the keynote speaker.
Miss Bowie State University 2012-2013, Ebony Paige, will host the conference.
"We are so pleased to have Dr. Jones-DeWeever provide the keynote speech at our conference", said Queen to Queen, Inc. Co-Founder and Conference Vice Chair Anisah Rasheed. "Leadership comes in many forms. Queens of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are not usually recognized as the strong and competent leaders they are. As a former queen, I certainly understand the role and with Dr. Jones-DeWeever addressing conference attendees, it's clear she sees the relevance in preparing these vital student body leaders."
The Ladies in Waiting Conference is designed to encourage and inspire young women to take on roles of leadership as their HBCU's queen.
During the one-day conference, Queen to Queen will bring together high school seniors and college women in the Greater Washington-Metropolitan Area to provide them with the advice, guidance, and tools every effective leader needs beginning on Day One. The Ladies in Waiting Conference will cover topics ranging from public speaking to ethical decision-making and image management to platform development.
"The Ladies in Waiting Conference is a one-of-a kind experience," said Jessica Canty, conference chairwoman and former queen. "Earning the title of 'Miss' on any college campus is a daunting, but not impossible, task. You have to know how to campaign on a college campus, how to determine what your platform should be, who should be on your team, when and how to address the media, and how to either win or lose gracefully among many other things. It's not all glitz and glamour. Becoming and then being a queen is leadership at its finest."
