Remembering Fromelles - A New Cemetery For A New Century

A commemorative book, Remembering Fromelles - A New Cemetery for a New Century, compiled by Julie Summers - is to be published by Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) on July 1. With foreword by HRH The Duke of Kent, President of the CWGC.

The book, to be exclusively distributed by military book specialists Tommies Guides of Eastbourne, marks the final burials in the new cemetery at Fromelles in northern France, created after the discovery of the remains of 250 Australian and British soldiers hastily buried behind German lines following the Battle of Fromelles in 1916.

Included is a detailed history of the battle, as well as the story of the discovery of the mass graves, the archaeology involved in the excavations, the work to identify the remains and the creation of the first new CWGC Cemetery since the end of the Second World War.

Contributing authors are: Kate Brady, Professor Margaret Cox, Dr Peter Jones, Dr Louise Loe and Nigel Steel.

Declared Ryan Gearing of Tommies Guides: "The book really looks into the men behind the battle. Whose sons, brothers, husbands or lovers were they? By piecing together the puzzle, the research teams have uncovered much information on family histories and many touching stories. Family members have added their information and explain what it was like to be caught up in this drama nearly a century after the event.

"Tommies Guides is greatly honoured to be associated with CWGC in this moving tribute to these comrades who gave their lives in Battle."

Remembering Fromelles is a 220mm x 240mm paperback with 96 pages and illustrations in both colour and black and white. It costs £9.95 and its ISBN is 9780956507402.
