In support of the Obama Administrations' initiation of our nation's first-ever Prevention and Wellness Month, Remo, Inc. announced today that they will be offering their HealthRHYTHMS wellness program facilitation training in Danbury, CT, September 16 - 18, 2011. More commonly known as HealthRHYTHMS Group Empowerment Drumming, trained facilitators of this research-based music and wellness program, offer HealthRHYTHMS sessions across the United States and in 24 other countries. A free service is offered on the company website where interested parties can locate a facilitator in their community. Nearly 2,000 trained professionals, who want to make the world a better place, are available to help.

Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services indicated yesterday in an article published in the Huffington Post (huffingtonpost.com), that "Good health starts with steps we can all take to avoid getting sick in the first place, from getting regular check-ups, vaccinations, and recommended screenings, to eating a healthy diet and getting enough exercise." But perhaps the most important component of better health was not addressed in the article, that being psycho-social health and well-being. In fact, if we want to bring down the cost of healthcare this may be a key component for success. The evidence-based HealthRHYTHMS program addresses this component of health, using music as a tool for communication and personal expression through a protocol that research has demonstrated may strengthen the immune system, reduce stress and burnout, and improve mood states. And those findings point to a significant financial savings potential, when considering the CDC cited statistics from the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine indicating health care expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress. But the program is not all science, there's also a bit of magic involved because 80% of training participants surveyed indicated that HealthRHYTHMS changed their lives in a positive way. And that is music to the ears of healthcare professionals who need to boost patient compliance with their individual healthcare process. Neurologist and Researcher Barry Bittman, MD describes the impact of HealthRHYTHMS this way:

"What we see here is nurturing and support that allows people to move past their perceived boundaries in a way that engages them, so that we can boost their compliance, and can make them more effective members of our healthcare team. When we engage people in their own healthcare process, the cost of healthcare will diminish, and quality of life will most certainly improve."

Healthcare treatment plan compliance determines whether we will succeed in leading healthier lives. Everyone knows that exercise plays a vital role in personal health. Significant resources have been dedicated to raise awareness about the importance of exercise, yet the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov) statistics show that the national average for physical activity has still declined from 31% in 1989 to 25% in 2008. This highlights the reason programs that help boost patient compliance with healthful activities are so important.

HealthRHYTHMS is the Recreational Music-Making Program of Choice for Planetree, a hospital affiliate network dedicated to whole person care. A recent edition of Planetalk magazine(planetree.org) featured an article titled "Minding the Gap: The Music of Compliance" where Stephen McLennon, MD and Alyssa Janney, MBA emphasized the importance of patient compliance. "Having skilled, compassionate caregivers and a healing environment is incredibly important. But without patient compliance with the treatment plan, the patient will not realize the full benefit of this premium level of care."

In addition to the HealthRHYTHMS Basic Training, and HealthRHYTHMS Adolescent Protocol Training (designed for use with at-risk youth) a new Advanced HealthRHYTHMS training program will be launched in Danbury, CT, September 16-18, 2011 which is designed to support and further develop the skills participants learn at the training.
