Republican "Tea Party" Candidate Nathan McDonell wins Volusia Straw poll nearly 2:1 over opponents
DeLand -On Saturday, May 22nd, the Volusia County Republican Executive Committee hosted the first and only official debate and candidate forum. The debate between the three candidates competing for the party nomination for State Representative, District 26 led the day and lasted for over an hour. The District 26 seat is currently held by Pat Patterson, who is termed out.
Discussing a wide range of issues from tax reform, gun rights, education, energy and corruption, the audience had an opportunity to listen to each candidate live and unrehearsed. Several in attendance commented that candidate Nathan McDonell was the clear winner by applause.
In addition to the debate, a straw poll was conducted, lasting the entire day, finally closing with the results at 4:30 pm.
The official Straw Poll results show the opponents, Ormond Beach Mayor Fred Costello and Police Union President Vince Champion almost tied, with Nathan McDonell beating them both by almost double.
This overwhelming victory for the McDonell campaign illustrates the growing influence of the grass roots activism in the nomination process.
Among many substantial points made at the forum was the fact that Mr. McDonell, a decorated combat Veteran, is the ONLY candidate in the District 26 race vetted and endorsed by the Independence Caucus, a national citizens group focused on integrity over big money.
Mr. McDonell was quoted last Sunday: "While these results are encouraging, we know that the only "poll" that matters is the one on August 24th."
