Research from DiscountVouchers.co.uk Finds Brits Ignorant of What Their Partners Earn

Online, February 8, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The latest piece of consumer research conducted by money-saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk has found a massive one quarter of Brits having no idea how much money their partner makes.

The poll uncovered that 27.25% of UK consumers do not know what sort of salary their partner brings home. In addition the survey also found that women were twice as duplicitous as men, with 8% of women admitting to having personal bank accounts in which they keep money hidden away from their partner.

The new DiscountVouchers.co.uk poll also found that 43% of women have lied to a loved one about what they spent on clothing - while only 17% of men had done the same. The poll found that guilt was the main reason behind this.

The voucher codes website's poll surveyed people on their spending habits, and worryingly the website found that 40% of Brits have opened and read a partner's bank and credit card statements. 10% did however say that they simply never even bother opening or reading even their own bank and financial correspondence.

Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough says: "Not having trust in your partner can lead to duplicitous behaviour like opening bank statements or putting money aside in secret accounts. There's a real undercurrent of low self esteem and fear of the unknown to this kind of behaviour."

"Since many women take after their mothers, anyone whose mother was maybe secretive about money and what they paid for things is more likely to do that too. People do retain a level of intrinsic guilt about spending money - however people do nonetheless like to splash out."
