Researchers Predict 11 Percent of Americans Will Be Severely Obese by 2030

According to a recent 400-page report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), over 65% of American adults are overweight.

A recent Duke University study predicted that the percentage of severely obese Americans-100 pounds or more overweight-will double to 11 percent by 2030. Obesity is closely connected with diabetes, heart disease and other ailments, and is a major factor in America's rising health care costs.

And according to a recent 400-page report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), over 65% of American adults are overweight. The report estimates that obesity is costing the US $190.2 billion a year in illness-related costs, and that 17 percent of US children are now obese compared to less than 6% 30 years ago. The authors urge a renewed focus on schools, calling for more healthy food choices and more time devoted to physical activity.

"Every individual needs to make it a priority to reverse this situation," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and
The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).

"It is estimated that 33% of children born today will develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetime," add the Griesels. "The IOM suggested that people only have a limited ability to control their weight in an environment where there is abundant food. We each need to start exercising control and making sure that we have our own weight and health under control. Parents need to set the example for their children, and teachers should also be role models. In order to be effective, any national health policy changes will need to start with every American initiating their own personal policy initiatives."
