Risk of Death from All Causes Raised by Obesity and Diabetes, Say Researchers
Online, April 9, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Researchers at the American Cancer Society and Harvard University recently concluded that obesity and diabetes increase risk of death from all causes. The team based their conclusion on two studies examining the impact on survival rates of body-mass index and a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
In the first study, the risk of death was 30% higher for those who were overweight at the start of the study compared with those people of a normal weight; the risk of dying from heart disease was 68% higher; and the risk of dying from colorectal cancer was 35% higher.
The second study found that people with type 2 diabetes were 53% more likely to die from any cause and 29% more likely to die from colorectal cancer compared to those without type 2 diabetes. The risk of dying from heart disease was over 200% higher in people with type 2 diabetes and nearly 400% higher in people with type 2 diabetes who used insulin when compared to those in the study without type 2 diabetes.
"Eating large amounts of fiber-rich plant foods and avoiding excessive intake of meat and refined, processed foods are simple things everyone can do to reduce their risk for all chronic diseases," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH).
"It is up to us as individuals to take responsibility for our health," adds Dian. "Obesity and type 2 diabetes can both be vastly improved or totally eliminated by incorporating proper diet and lifestyle choices."
