Risk of Lung Cancer Dramatically Lower Among Non-smokers, Experts Say
Online, February 29, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced that the incidence of lung cancer in the U.S. is dropping, and western states are leading the way. Ninety percent of lung cancer cases can be attributed to smoking, experts say; smoking has been steadily declining in states that have initiated education on the health hazards of smoking and regulations banning smoking in public areas.
A century ago, lung cancer was rare, but it has since become the number one killer cancer in the U.S., followed by breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, it will kill about 150,000 people this year. Smoking is also linked to incidence of heart disease and other health issues.
"Despite these statistics, the national average of smokers is about 20%. What are these people thinking?" ask boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). . "The risk of getting lung cancer can be reduced by over 90% by not smoking. People who choose to smoke are playing Russian roulette. If they choose to do so and end up with lung cancer, it's their choice. However, what should bother everyone is that they are also responsible for putting additional stress on our national healthcare system and health insurance rates."
"As Americans, we should all be concerned about our health and the rising costs of healthcare in our country," adds Tom. "There is no question that smoking is harmful not only to the smoker's health, but also to the health of those around them. We all need to be making responsible dietary and lifestyle choices and quit doing the selfish and dumb things that have ramifications that extend beyond ourselves."
