Leaders and team members from Riverpoint Management have returned from an inspiring leadership conference. The firm's director of operations detailed the event and shared her best advice for networking at conferences.

Kelly and the rest of the Riverpoint Management leadership team know how difficult it can be to make real connections at an industry conference. “In a crowded event hall or convention center, it can be tough to properly focus your networking efforts,” added the director. “I always remind my team of a few helpful techniques to make things a bit easier.”

The director begins by telling her team members to do their homework before an event starts. As she commented, “You have to network with real intent. If you know which companies will be in attendance and who will represent them, you’ll know exactly who to pursue. A little bit of research goes a long way in a conference setting.”

It’s also important to avoid arriving too early for the day’s proceedings. “If you get there before things really get going, it’s almost guaranteed to be an awkward experience,” Kelly noted. “It’s especially difficult to start and maintain a good conversation in this situation, because you and your conversation partner will just be looking around to see who else is arriving.”

Another tactic Kelly recommends is asking open-ended questions when interacting with new connections. “If you’re just getting yes’s and no’s from the other person, you aren’t likely to figure out what kind of value you can offer,” she said. “When you ask open-ended questions, you encourage your contacts to talk more about themselves and their unique needs. From there, you can focus on the specific type of help you can provide.”
