Rotary Auction & Rummage Sale Delivers on Green Promise, Increases Proceeds

The Bainbridge Island Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale is one of the best examples of reuse and recycle of goods in the Northwest. It is also one of the best examples of an entire community taking ownership of one great philanthropic effort and ensuring its success. This year's Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale grossed $366,435, up $25,000 from 2010.

All proceeds are used to improve lives and enrich local and international communities. These funds support a wide variety of community efforts, including scholarships, recreation and cultural infrastructure on Bainbridge Island, safe water and sanitation internationally.

The Rotary Auction happens through the generosity of the Bainbridge community and the selfless dedication of hundreds and hundreds of volunteers. Over 1,000 community volunteers donate countless hours working at the Woodward Middle School site, collecting over 100,000 items for sorting, cleaning and pricing.

This year a record forty two charities and non profits collected unsold items after the sale. Broken candles are donated to Salish Sea Expeditions, to be turned into fire starters. Thirty three boxes of commercial vases were delivered to two florist shops on the island. Three truck loads of plastic bags were delivered to Town & Country Market for recycling. A local Women's Shelter received 26 boxes of personal and grooming items. Three hundred pounds of old mismatched, dirty running shoes were donated to a recycling project. Keys from 100 computer keyboards will be used by a women's prison art project.

The 52nd Rotary Auction will be held the last Saturday of June 2012. More information at www.bainbridgeislandrotary.org
