In a recent blog post, Sacramento Movers shared tips on how to store print photographs. Photographs help link to some of the best memories and are valuable reminders of accomplishments, milestones, and life transitions. In recent years it's become common for personal photos to be stored digitally on a hard drive or on CD's. However many people still have a shoe-box or two full of print photographs from the good old days.

Perhaps there is a dusty photo album tucked away in some corner of the bookshelf that sits neglected for most of the year. These paper and ink relics will not preserve forever-colors fade or copies may become exposed to water damage. If there is a scanner available at home, take the time to scan these into the computer to share and save digitally. If scanning is not an option, take the following precautions to protect these valuable links to the past.

First, gather and prepare all print pictures that need to be stored. Dust off the photo album and carefully remove photos from the pages. The glue, plastic and paper that compose photo albums often contain acidic qualities that will eventually erode the quality of the photographs. If needed, dust each photo using a soft, dry cloth and remove any sticky substance from the photo such as tape or craft cement. Use a soft tipped pen to label the back of each photo with names and dates.

For storage of framed photos, be sure to use an acid-free mat to separate the photo from the glass. The rear mount should also be acid free. These materials may not only delay but actually eliminate deterioration of the photo. Use a soft quilt or bubble wrap to cover the framed photo and add cushioning. Store this in a picture box available from moving box suppliers. Be sure to add extra padding in the corners of the box.
