Sacramento Roofing Company Warns of Heat Damage

Sacramento roofing company, Yancey Home Improvements warns homeowners of the damage that the heat could have dealt on roofs.

Temperature reached searing heights as the recent heat wave took its toll on most of the nation. As homeowners recover from one of the hottest heat waves since 1895, Sacramento roofing company, Yancey Home Improvements warns homeowners of the damage that the heat could have dealt on roofs. According to a local roofer, heat reaching as high up as 104 degrees is bad for all types of roof, and warns homeowners of the risks that come with roofing damaged caused by heat.

"Sacramento roofs are not designed to withstand very high heat. You're looking at a number of damage especially on older homes" says a Yancey Home Improvement roofer in an interview. He stresses the importance of having the roof checked for issues caused by exposure to high temperatures.

The roofing firm provides a list of the most common roofing damage and the materials that are most likely to get damaged during the heat wave.

Asphalt shingles

Sacramento roofing companies are expecting plenty of issues with asphalt shingle roofing, especially among older homes. According to roofing experts, the asphalt shingles used in the construction of Sacramento roofs are not rated to last in high heat. The most common damage includes cracking and warping of the shingles. The heat can also cause severe damage to three-tab shingles. "Sometimes, it can get so hot that the asphalt shingles melt off," a roofing contractor claims.

While laminated shingles are less likely to get damaged by the heat wave, contractors say that the sheathing may not be so lucky, as the latter is often made of oriented strand board - a material used to provide a second layer of protection to the deck. As OSB is basically molded wood strips, it can easily get damaged when expose to heat.

The same goes for the deck. Contractors say that older decks made of untreated wood can weaken as it warp and bends in the heat. Because it is in contact with the roofing surface, it is exposed to both direct heat and the heat trapped in the attic space.

Wood shake

Homes with wood shake roofs are just as vulnerable to heat damage. "Expect to see splitting and cracking on wood shingles as wood expands when exposed to high heat." a Sacramento roofing contractor explains.

Roofers agree that an immediate inspection be conducted for older asphalt shingle roofs to prevent further damage. Wood is highly susceptible to heat damage. If left unchecked, the roof is susceptible to being blown off by strong winds. The deck and the attic space can also be left exposed. This can lead to leaks and drips overtime.

Other materials

Steel and tile roofs are not as affected by heat, but roofers advise that it's best to have the attic space checked. According to contractors, the wood found in the rafters could have been damaged. For Torch down roofing, homeowners are warned of buckling and warping of the surface of the roof. In some cases, the heat can become so intense that the roofing material melts and bubbles.
