Sales Improve as Toyota Camry Attracts Younger Buyers
Younger buyers are showing a noticeable increase in interest for the Toyota Camry.
Online, August 24, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Toyota has recently recognized that the popular 2012 Toyota Camry has risen in popularity among the younger generation of vehicle buyers. This popularity has led to a significant increase in sales of the Camry. Toyota did not anticipate the success among this market, but they are certainly not complaining.
In 2012 the top-selling Toyota Camry was remodeled giving it a more stylish, luxurious makeover. Bob Carter, Toyota's senior vice president of automotive operations in the United States, explained that this year the sales of the Camry increased nearly 40%. That's 60,000 more vehicles sold than the Camry's two top competitors, the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.
This new version of the Camry easily knocked ten years off the age of the average buyer. "We didn't anticipate that much movement in the demographics," Carter explained. The 2012 Camry SE represents a sportier version of the sedan. It features a firmer suspension, aluminum wheels and low-profile tires, grabbing the attention of the younger market. This trim now makes up 40% of Camry sales.
Last year, Toyota suffered some hardships when an earthquake and tsunami ruptured Toyota's factories. This led to vehicle shortages worldwide. Today's rising Camry sales show that Toyota is also strongly recovering from the incident.
Carter also explained that Toyota expects to sell 2 million vehicles in the U.S. this year, predicting total industry sales in the U.S. to reach 14.3 million. Earlier this year Toyota forecasted only 13.6 million in sales, but they increased the forecast due to the recent change in market demographic.
The 2012 Camry features a 2.5-liter 4-Cylinder DOHC engine driving 78 horsepower and generating 170 lb-ft. of torque. It also has an impressive EPA-estimated 25 city/35 highway mpg fuel economy rating. It has been recognized by several vehicle experts for its top performance and great safety features. It was awarded as a Top Safety Pick in 2012 by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety; it received Kelley Blue Book's 2012 Best Resale Value Award and became the #1 selling car in America. The 2012 Camry is setting the bar for competing sedans in its class.
