Sales of Pendants Give Hope to Economic Recovery for Jewelers

Online, November 16, 2013 (Newswire.com) - The holiday gift buying season is off to a tremendous start and jewelers across the country are cautiously optimistic that they will have one of the best years in recent memory. What is fueling this optimism is that, while figures of most styles of jewelry are holding steady or showing slight increases over last year, the sales of pendants, specifically diamond pendants and chain slides, are up by double digit percentages both online as well as at retail outlets across the country.
When asked what they thought was driving this increase, one senior diamond buyer at Van Scoy Diamonds offered this opinion: "Pendants represent a wide range of styles and emotions. Whereas diamond earrings have a romantic connotation with them, and of course a diamond ring really can only mean one thing to people, pendants can be anything from a fun whimsical gift for a friend, like a chain slide, to more serious and heartfelt, as represented by journey pendants. What we're actually seeing a lot of, and this is true at other stores as well from what I'm hearing, are fathers coming in and buying diamond pendants for their wives and chain slides for their daughters. It is these multiple purchases that are really driving the growth we've noticed."
Informal surveys done throughout the industry seem to draw the same conclusions. People like the more personal nature that pendants seem to offer. With so many designs to choose from, it is easy to find a look that speaks directly to the personality of who the gift is for. Plus, with the advent of custom design jewelry becoming more affordable and easier than ever, people are willing to express themselves creatively, and pendants offer a better platform for that creativity than one would find with rings or necklaces.
When asked if she thought this trend would continue, the diamond buyer was cautiously optimistic. "Jewelry purchases in general tend to reflect a greater level of customer confidence in the economy, so as long as we don't continue to have the nightmares in Washington, I don't see any reason to expect pendants to suddenly become less popular."
