Scared Hitless Takes Two More

The Defending City of Rockville Champs finally made it onto the field Monday night in what has proven to be a rain soaked season. However, the skies were blue and the field was dry for the double header contest between Scared Hitless and The Goonies

The unproven yet strong Goonies were no match for the seasoned and motivated Scared Hitless. The boys in green swung the bats consistently to open up a 15-0 margin which carried into the 5th inning at which time the excessive run deficit rule ended the game early. Stellar at bats were recorded by Kyle Sourk, Brad King, Chris Morely and Ben Haddon all of whom, reached base in each of their plate appearances. The real highlight of the first game was the brick-walled defense employed by Scared Hitless. A shutout in men's slow pitch softball is rare and the boys in green made it look easy, snagging short fly balls and barely letting anything get through infield. A pair of strikeouts in the first game and a third in the second exemplified the difference in pitcher Ben Haddon's years of experience and The Goonies relative greenness.
The second game proved to be more difficult as The Goonies strung together hits and took an early lead. The Goonies really hit their stride in the 6th inning capitalizing on a handful of well placed hits and scoring 5 more runs. The Green Wall of Defense seemed to be breaking down. Scared Hitless came to bat in the bottom of the sixth down 6 runs and facing another split doubleheader. After 2 quick outs a nervous tension grew amongst the fans. All hope was not lost yet as the boys began to rally and string together some hits. With 2 runners on base, Chris Morely came to the plate and noticed the left center fielder cheating in. Morely reached down deep and let loose a screaming missile, clearing the left center fielder and the bases. For the first time in the game, some excitement spread through dugout. A few batters later, deja vu all over again. With 2 runners on base, Chris Ricketts again exploited the left center fielder and touched them all giving the boys in green their first lead of the night. However, they weren't done yet. The rally continued spanning the entire lineup including a solo shot by Danny Maggin. When it was all said and done, Scared Hitless reached base 12 consecutive times, scoring 10 consecutive base runners, taking a 11-7 lead; all with 2 outs. The top of the 7th was a mere formality as the boys retired 3 of the first 4 batters to end the game. Another exciting finish for the country's most electrifying slow pitch softball team.

The boys take the field again next Sunday, June 6th, 6PM at Broome #2.
