School Library Relies On Mackin's Customization Services To Move From Dewey Decimal System To BISAC

St. Vrain Valley School District utilizes Mackin's extensive customization services to switch from Dewey Decimal System to the word-based classification system - BISAC.

St. Vrain Valley School District's newest school library has utilized the extensive customization services provided by Mackin Educational Resources to switch from the time-honored Dewey Decimal System to the word-based classification system - BISAC.

Red Hawk Elementary is one of the first schools to implement the bookstore model, BISAC, to organize the books within its library collection. With the BISAC system, books do not have call numbers on the spine; instead, books are sorted by broad topics and then into specific categories and subcategories. The district will monitor checkout histories and searches to determine if this system changes search and reading habits of students. If found successful, the district may implement the BISAC system district wide.

St. Vrain's District Librarian, Holli Buchter, said, "This new school library involved lots of coordination, calls, and assistance from Mackin. Our Mackin Opening Day Collection Coordinator was crucial to its successful opening. Together, we were able to locate the books we needed for this dual curriculum school. Everything needed to be created as we went along. Mackin was able to provide the customization we needed and fully meet my expectations."

With its long-standing reputation for accommodating special requests from schools and libraries, Mackin Educational Resources was selected for this unique opening day collection. Mackin worked closely with the school district cataloger and media coordinator to examine each item, assign official BISAC headings and create new sets and subject headings.

Mackin Educational Resources has provided library and classroom materials to PK-12 schools for 27 years. Known for its high commitment to customer care and customization, Mackin provides library and classroom books, ebooks, online databases, and more to schools around the globe.
