Similarities and differences between the two modalities allow for synergies to exist that provide a mechanism to perform a comprehensive assessment of cardiac function. Dr. Connelly will present about how these two technologies complement each other in studying cardiac function.
Echocardiography is the most commonly used tool to assess cardiac function and chamber dimensions in animal models of disease, and to assess the efficacy of novel treatment strategies. Whilst an excellent, well validated technique, the data obtained is limited by the availability of adequate acoustic windows, and dependence upon loading conditions.
Invasive pressure volume loop analysis enables real time, load in-sensitive measures of cardiac function (systolic and diastolic) to be obtained. Furthermore, the interaction between vascular and ventricular interactions can be assessed, along with the detailed assessment of both the active and passive phases of diastolic function. Given many transgenic and KO strains demonstrate large changes in loading conditions, this clearly offers advantages over echocardiography. However, invasive PV loop analysis is a complex technique to both perform and analyse. In this webinar Dr. Connelly will discuss both the advantages and challenges of echocardiography and invasive PV loop analysis in the assessment of cardiac function, and demonstrate how he uses these techniques in a complimentary fashion in his own lab to better understand cardiac physiology in vivo.

About Dr. Connelly
Dr. Connelly is a clinician scientist and staff physician at St Michael's Hospital where his clinical responsibilities involve echocardiography and cardiac MRI. His basic science laboratory is involved in exploring mechanisms of diabetic complications, principally diastolic heart failure and developing novel therapeutic strategies to treat this. Dr. Connelly also collaborates closely with the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in elucidating the role of real time cardiac metabolism in the pathogenesis of post MI remodeling, and developing novel MR techniques to enable non-invasive tissue characterization.
