ScriptEd Receives 10k Donation from HP to Support Educational Programs for Secure Computer Programming in High-Need Schools
Online, November 17, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Today ScriptEd received a $10,000 donation from HP to support its work providing educational opportunities in secure computer programming to students in low-income schools.
ScriptEd immerses students in the technology industry through programming courses taught by industry volunteers. Students participate in Hackathons at the end of each semester to put their skills in programming and critical thinking to the test. Over the summer, ScriptEd links students with paid summer internships where they gain professional experience in coding.
"We want to give our students the resources and mentorship they need to pursue careers in technology," said ScriptEd Education Manager Becca Novak. "This generous gift from HP will help us to ensure that our students have the skills and experiences that they need to become creators of secure technology."
"The development of new technology is an integral part of today's workplace, and making sure future generations have the passion, skills, and experience to secure that technology is very important," said Jason Schmitt, director of Product Management, Enterprise Security Products, Fortify, HP. "We are pleased to be able to support efforts providing opportunities for students to prepare for a career in application security."
In addition to the monetary donation, HP has also provided ScriptEd students and staff free access to the HP Fortify on Demand solution. HP Fortify on Demand consultants will also lead sessions on security assessments and vulnerability remediation during ScriptEd's Spring Hackathon, on December 14, 2013.
"We want our students to learn to write code securely," said ScriptEd Executive Director Maurya Couvares. "The generous donation from HP will help us to educate students about potential security vulnerabilities."
ScriptEd won the Dewey Winburne Community Service Award from South by Southwest, the Judges' Choice Award in the Millennial Impact Challenge from IGNITEgood and Huffington Post, the Teach for America Social Innovation Award, the Emerging Innovator Award from American Express, and the My Voice Our City Award from Ashoka. ScriptEd has been recognized by the White House as a Champion of Change for Tech Inclusion and has been featured in Smithsonian, Time, Huffington Post, CBS , Technically Brooklyn, and the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and its Co-Founder Maurya Couvares was a featured speaker at TEDxNYED.
