Online, September 17, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Kingsbrae Garden invites any sculptor living and working in Canada to enter the third annual Canadian Sculpture competition for 2011. The last two years have brought wonderful works in many media to be installed in Kingsbrae's Sculpture Garden, amongst wildflowers, ornamental grasses, complementary perennials and waves of purple beech, all enhanced by extensive water features, mature trees and century-old cedar hedges. Successful applicants came from coast to coast in both instances-2009 and 2010.
Canada's largest outdoor sculpture competition is set in the magnificent 27-acre public garden, in scenic St Andrews by-the-Sea (New Brunswick), itself a National Historic District. In 2010, Mark Breckenridge's superb "Eagle" (Bluevale, ON) won first place and Douglas Walker's water fountain sculpture "Saxophone Stretch with Trombones on the Side" (Black Creek BC), earned second prize. Winners from 2009, "Canadian Geese in Flight" (Kerry O'Toole, NB) and a bronze "Heron" (Brett David, ON), are in place in the Sculpture Garden, where a dynamic collection of works by Canadian artists is growing, shared with tens of thousands of visitors from across the world who stream through Kingsbrae Garden annually. All 2010 sculptures but the winners are for sale to the public and will be on exhibit until October 9th, 2010, when Kingsbrae Garden closes for the season.
Ingenious plantings make the discovery of each sculpture a mini-adventure, encouraging visitors to appreciate each on its own merits, while strolling through a verdant horticultural creation, across Monet-style bridges and rocky streams. The juxtaposition of art and nature adds an extra element of pleasure for visitors of all ages and interests.
The deadline for 2011 entries is fast approaching, on October 1st. The competition, though young, is gaining attention around the country and further afield. Everyone is welcome to participate, whether an established artist or someone wishing to make a sculpting start. The first and second prizes for the competition are $10,000 and $5000, respectively. First prize winners are assured of a permanent place in the Sculpture Garden, and second will also become the property of Kingsbrae Garden, to be displayed at the Garden's discretion around the site, joining dozens of sculptures and fountains amidst 50,000 perennials, shrubs and trees. Non-winners are for sale to the public, but will remain on display throughout the 2011 season.
The entry form is online at http://www.kingsbraegarden.com/sculpcomp/index.html, as well as all the competition particulars. A maquette or drawing of the sculpture must be submitted by noon, Friday, October 1st, 2010 and the jury selection results will be publicized by October 29th. Those selected for the competition will submit photos of either the completed work or the work in progress by Friday February 11, 2011.
The 2011 Canadian Sculpture Competition opening and awards ceremony will take place on Friday, June 10, 2011. All sculptors are warmly invited to apply and attend. For anyone with an artistic itch or aspiration, this is an opportunity to test your mettle... whether in metal, wood, stone, fiberglass or other weather and frost-proof material. Don't be shy-show off your figure, or encourage a friend to do so.
