The Seattle based nonprofit organization Seattle Tilth offers Washington residents how-to workshops on raising animals in their backyard.

The group's workshops have become so popular that residents are on a waiting list for workshops teaching them how to raise chickens. Other courses include bee keeping, raising goats, and raising ducks.

Local resident BJ Hedahl runs workshops instructing urban farmers how to raise ducks in their backyards. 'They're lower maintenance than chickens and I think (the eggs) taste better" Hedahl said.

When Hedahl first started raising ducks she found there were not a lot of experts in the area to turn to for advice. One of her first newbie mistakes was buying a breed that quacked constantly. This didn't win her any popularity contests with her neighbors. She now has 2 each khaki Campbell and Indian runners, breeds that are much quieter than her first ducks.

The workshop Hedahl teaches is called "City Ducks 101," and is subtitled "Learn how to get started, raising your very own team of ducks - no lake required!"

Hedahl is part of a growing movement all over the country of city dwellers raising their own vegetables and animals for meat, egg, and milk production. "I can tell the difference. You can taste the freshness. The carrot out of the ground tastes different from the carrot that has been in the store for a week. That goes for raspberries, blueberries, eggs, bread, you name it" she says.
