Seiko 5 Sports Automatic Monster: Because Divers’ Aren’t Everyone’s Cuppa!

Starting 1924 till now, Seiko has developed a long and impressive history. As a brand that pushes boundaries till date, conversations about fine timepieces shall inevitably bring up some Seiko reference amidst all that European pedigree. That’s because Seiko is ruthless when it comes to get done serious work. QC is taken very seriously, even for the parts they import overseas for some of their watch lines. The rest of the productions are done by owned subsidiaries and it has kept Seiko fully integrated, in Japan and globally. To them, that’s a fantastic value.

Both in the modern-day market and even more so in the vintage one, good Seiko Chronograph pieces still appear to be iconic, nice, heavy, chunky-lookers of a watch. It feels great to wear them; also feels good to see. Seiko doesn’t disappoint at that point.

This is the Orange Chunky Hunk, the next thing one might like after the Orange Monster. An Seiko Phase De Lune means the same thing. Or to sound technical, it could be Monster Lite.

There are differences; not that it’s just a scaled down replica of the legendary Monster. The hour markers; the case-size, the position of the crown - Seiko never meant the Monster Lite to lock horns with their original counterparts. Instead, they gave things an upgrade. It’s a much dressier look than the ISO-rated Monster’s. Anyone who likes the diver’s design but find things way too big for daily use, the Seiko Astron Lites are likely to appeal.

The Mini Monster makes for a mid-sized stature with its orange analog dial protected by a HardlexTM crystal. Its 4R36 caliber, self-winding mechanical movement can be manually wound and hacked. The day window shows the day of the week in two language choice; there’s English and another from Spanish, Arabic, Kanji, Chinese, French or Roman. There are 6 ticks to every second and that brings a smoother sweep! Twist the crown to fully wound and set it up to run for the next 41 hours. When one wear Seiko Premier Watches, it will self-wind as one move, filling up the lost turns of the mainspring.

Its 42mm width (excluding the crown) and 12mm depth are easier to carry around in a busy urban life and its water resistance of 100 meters takes care of anything one do with water. The crown is well-guarded against accidental pulls. The smooth and sturdy rotating stainless steel bezel keeps elapsed time turning counter-clockwise with 120 clicks. It’s not as scalloped as the real Monster's bezel but it is significantly easier to grip. The lugs with a 22mm gap fit in plenty of bands for customisation.
