Holiday Sock Drive
Targets 40,000 Pairs of Socks for Valley Homeless
Scottsdale, Arizona - Shoebox Ministry, a local non-profit organization that provides personal hygiene products to the homeless, hopes to make Christmas a little brighter for the Valley's estimated 13,000 homeless men, women, and children.
This is the 21st year of Shoebox Ministry's Annual Holiday Sock Drive. The goal is to collect 40,000 pairs of new socks (23,000 men's & 17,000 women's), to be distributed to 40+ Valley homeless and domestic violence shelters, including Sojourner Center, Church on the Street, Salvation Army, Chrysalis, St. Joseph the Worker, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), Teen Challenge and Florence Crittenton.
Each year, socks are donated by local businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, and individuals. Last year's Sock Drive resulted in 33,336 pairs of socks for this worthy cause. Socks are the ideal Christmas gift because foot problems are the leading medical ailment among the homeless.
"For many homeless people a couple of pairs of new socks is the only gift they will receive at Christmas," said Laura Borgeson, Shoebox Ministry's Program Director. "One pair of socks - a simple gesture - can make a world of difference to someone who is in this situation," she added.
Donations of new socks are requested by Saturday, December 17th and can be dropped off at the following locations:
Scottsdale ~ Shoebox Ministry, all week 8am to 7pm, Hayden / Sweetwater
Phoenix ~ Paradise Valley Comm. Church, M-F 9am to 4pm Greenway / 42nd St.
Mesa ~ Housing Quest, M-F 9am to 5pm and Sat. 10am to 4pm, S-W corner Gilbert Rd / Southern
Glendale ~ The Church at Arrowhead, M-F 9am to 4pm, 79th Ave / Union Hills
