Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge Opens Six Months Ahead of Schedule Due to Alliance with VSL Australia
Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture's alliance with VSL Australia proves successful as the project is completed months ahead of schedule.
Online, July 27, 2010 (Newswire.com) - (San Diego, CA) - Construction of over 85 per cent of the project has been delivered, and the focus now shifts to the completion of the refurbishment of the existing Sir Leo Hielscher Bridge, design and construction of the new 4 kilometres of motorway upgrade in the southern section of the project and to the planning and delivery of motorway maintenance services under a 10 year maintenance contract the joint venture has with the Gateway Motorway operators, Queensland Motorways.
"The alliance with VSL Australia for the construction of the new bridge brought to the project specialist engineers and international expertise in the construction of balanced cantilever bridges. Similarly, the alliance established with a group of piling contractors to undertake the piling works, ended up being one of the largest piling contracts ever undertaken in Australia. That was very successful," says Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture Project Director Hugh Boyd. "There is no doubt that without this alliance there would have been a very different story in terms of progress."
The $2.12 billion Gateway Upgrade Project is one of the largest bridge and road project in Queensland's history. A state government initiative, the project is being delivered by Queensland Motorways with design, construction and maintenance by the Leighton Abigroup Joint Venture. The project totals 20km, a bridge duplication and refurbishment.
