Six Ways to Help El Cajon Air Conditioning Units Keep Up During Extreme Heat
Online, September 16, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The summer heat is scorching inland areas, and AC units are hard at work cooling San Diego homes and businesses. In mid-August, El Cajon High School had to send students home early more than once when the school's air conditioning unit broke during a heat wave.
"When temperatures near 100, it usually means higher energy bills and more repair calls, but people can do certain things to help their HVAC unit keep up with the heat," said Gabriel Carini, who is an El Cajon air conditioning and heating business owner.
These six tips may sound simple, but they can go a long way toward increasing indoor comfort levels:
1. Replace or clean air filters. A dirty, clogged air filter makes the heating, air conditioning and ventilation system work longer and harder to get indoor temperatures to the desired setting.
2. Clear off the exterior unit. Dirt, debris and landscaping located too close to the unit block crucial air flow. Just make sure to turn off the system before beginning.
3. Flip on the ceiling fans on the counterclockwise or forward setting. Room temperature does not change, but the circulating air can make people feel eight degrees cooler. Turn fans off when leaving since fans cool people, not rooms.
4. Get a La Mesa air conditioning unit tuneup. A system that has not been running well could be in need of routine maintenance and minor tuneups to get it running at peak efficiency. Biannual tuneups can also lengthen the life of the equipment and help people avoid many major AC problems.
5. Close blinds, shades or drapes during the hottest hours of the day to block out sun and heat that radiates through windows.
6. Caulk around windows and add weather stripping around doors to keep conditioned air in and the heat out.
