SKELETONS Part One: Laredo

First-time novelist invents a new kind of hell to convey the plight of rural America.

SKELETONS Part One: Laredo

“Jamessssss,” the skeleton called until it possessed the boy, forced him to steal a mysterious book from Saint Michael's Church and threatened to kill his best friends if they were unwilling to perform a séance that opened a tunnel to Hell a few weeks before Halloween. Welcome to the farm town of Laredo, where a fleshless creature, seven teenagers and a violent sociopath nicknamed the Bald Man collide at the crossroads of Highways 34 and 61.

When the sophomores are face-to-face with this resurrected evil, they make the life or death decision to confront the skeleton head-on. One by one they fall prey to its revenge while their families and the police try to solve the mystery of the supernatural activity enveloping their sleepy little town.

“I’m using SKELETONS as an allegory to illustrate the breakdown of rural America at the hands of multi-national corporations,” Reeves explains. “They don’t have the residents’ best interests in mind. We used to buy a pair of work boots, see a movie and get our banking done on Front Street. Nowadays, there are more FOR RENT signs in the windows than OPEN signs. The horror genre allows me to be creative and surreal when taking on capitalism, small businesses and religion without non-fiction clichés.”

Andrew Reeves grew up in the rural town of El Paso, Illinois, where his family owned a farm for over one hundred years. After stints in graphic design, music and painting, he turned to his love of horror to explore his past. Part One: Laredo is the first novel in The Rapture Trilogy, to be followed by Part Two: The Bald Man and Part Three: Revelations. He plans on later living in the Abiquiú area of New Mexico to write The Indian Wars, a post-Civil War western that will reveal the origins of the Master and the Bald Man.
