SmartCharge Nashville to Help Prepare City for Growing Power Demand From Electric Vehicle Drivers

EV drivers called upon to participate in a volunteer study.

FleetCarma and The Tennessee Valley Authority, with Nashville Electric Service and Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation has launched SmartCharge Nashville. This project will be a voluntary study in and around the Nashville area to understand how the city can prepare for a growing number of electric vehicles.

Would-be electric vehicle (EV) owners often question vehicle driving range – how far an EV can drive before needing a charge. Similarly, Utilities are responsible for ensuring that the power system is ready for more EV drivers and wonder how they should be preparing for the future. SmartCharge Nashville will help answer these questions by measuring the current needs of EV drivers to plan for future needs.

Current EV drivers are called upon to participate in the study in order to produce an accurate data set of the growing requirement for EV charging. The SmartCharge Nashville study data will be a critical component to ensure that the power system remains reliable for all customers and ready to support clean transportation for the foreseeable future.

In addition to helping usher in the next generation of EV drivers, participants will have access to technology typically reserved for large commercial fleets, the FleetCarma C2 device, and FleetCarma Dashboards. EV drivers enrolled in the study can access data such as their driving and charging history, energy consumption statistics, vehicle battery state-of-charge as well as the total tons of greenhouse gas emissions they have saved by driving an EV. Study participants will also receive compensation for their participation.

Volunteers are eligible to participate in the study if they live in the greater Nashville area and drive an all-electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (vehicles that recharge by plugging in). Enrollment is limited so those interested are encouraged to register early on the SmartCharge Nashville program page.
