Socratic Hits #1 in App Store
Homework Helper App Goes Viral in App Store
New York, NY, January 31, 2017 (Newswire.com) - Just days after Chris Pedregal and Shreyans Bhansali announced a student-first math experience in their mobile app, Socratic, the app had been featured on the front page of the App Store, ranked #1 in Free Education apps, and ranked #17 in Free Apps overall. The app received over 800 5-star reviews within days of launching.
“We’re blown away by both the media attention and the feature in the App Store. Most of all though, we’re excited about how many more students, educators, and parents know about us,” says Shreyans Bhansali, co-founder and Head of Engineering at Socratic.
"We've received amazing feedback from users about our math features. We're more motivated than ever to bring a similar experience to Android users. We hope to expand our coverage in math and other major subjects and continue to serve students of all learning styles."

Historically, the Socratic app has focused on helping students in Science subjects - especially Chemistry and Biology - as well as History and Humanities subjects. However, after hundreds of user tests, it became clear that high school students struggle with math homework more than any other subject. They decided to build math-specific features that would allow students to break down their problems and learn the underlying concepts. In addition to step-by-step solutions and custom “Explainer” content, the app also shows graphs, curated videos, and relevant definitions, helping students reach a deeper understanding of the problem.
“We’ve received amazing feedback from users about our math features,” says Bhansali. “We’re more motivated than ever to bring a similar experience to Android users. We hope to expand our coverage in math and other major subjects and continue to serve students of all learning styles.”
On the same day they launched their math experience, Socratic announced they would be open-sourcing the code behind their math system. The blog post announcing the news and explaining the logic behind the code made it to the #1 spot on HackerNews. “We’ve heard from hundreds of engineers and have already had over a dozen contributors suggest changes and fix errors in the code. The community is really excited about what we’ve built. The support has been amazing,” says Ahmed Elnaiem, who heads the math team at Socratic.
Buoyed by positive feedback, the Socratic team hopes to continue growing their fan base and work hard to expand coverage. “We want students across the globe to have access to this free digital tutor,” says Bhansali.
