Sony Cybershot RX100 II Offers Development and Upgrades Over the Original RX100

Sony has announced the launch of the Sony Cybershot RX100 II, the second generation of the high end RX100. It is an expensive camera, even compared to the original and when considering there isn't that much difference between the two models, but excellent image quality and the addition of NFC and WiFi mean that it could well be £650 of money well spent for the budding amateur and even the professional photographer.

One of the standout features of the original RX100 was the 3" WRGB screen. It was widely applauded by those that tried it and while there haven't been any particular improvements over the screen itself, it can now be tilted and angled which makes it an even more convenient addition to the back of the camera. Even at awkward viewing and photo angles it is possible to take accurate and good looking shots. However, there are many that will consider this to be a minor improvement rather than a ground-breaking one.

The sensor, too, has changed from the previous version. Both offer the same 20.2 megapixel count but the new Sony Cybershot RX100 II is backlit and this means that there is a more direct path for light to take. In short, it means that while the megapixel count may not have increased, the quality of the pictures, especially at certain lights, will almost certainly see an improvement. It also means that it is possible to shoot at up to ISO 12,800.

The design of the Sony Cybershot RX100 II belies the fact, to some extent, that there is a big sensor lurking underneath. It certainly isn't the smallest compact camera available but, by the same token, it isn't the largest either. It is comfortable to hold and won't leave photographers with aching arms after a few hours of trying to get the best pictures. The screen is a generous and good quality one and the fact that it can be tilted is also a great benefit.

Critics believe that the £650 price tag, which is around £100 more than the original RX100 is now available for, is too much of a gap for what are fairly minor tweaks and improvements. This point to the fact that the RX100 now represents even better value for money and those looking for a high quality camera with a high quality screen and some critically acclaimed features may want to look to the original model while waiting for the price of its younger sibling to reduce a little.

Sony Cybershot also makes a large range of difference in cameras and camera devices. Users can choose a camera that best fits their needs and their budget. If £600 or more is too expensive then there are cameras available even as cheap as £100. Considering the Rx100 II doesn't have touch screen, does not have interchangeable lenses, and is pricey, many reviewers believe that the new RX100 will struggle to find a viable place in the market.
