- As hunger-relief organizations continue to look for new ways to serve an increasing number of local families who need help putting food on their tables, a new organization has formed to address the food insecurity issues in Miami-Dade County. Feed A Need, Inc., based in Miami Gardens, is a nonprofit organization providing food and complementary supportive services to help people achieve food security.

According to the 2013 Map The Meal Gap study, Miami-Dade County currently has the highest level of food insecurity in South Florida, at a shocking 17.8%. More than 441,000 people - 150,000 of whom are children - are food insecure; 74% of these families are currently relying solely on food stamps to feed their families.

On Nov. 16 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, seeking to help make up for the impact of the recent decreases in the SNAP (food stamp) program, Feed A Need volunteers and the Board of Directors-all of whom have previous charitable food distribution experience-will distribute food to participating hunger-relief agencies. Food to be distributed will include shelf-stable staples such as beans, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, soups and more.

"We are very excited and humbled to be able to bring this resource to Miami-Dade County," said Edwards. "The community is so appreciative of what we are trying to do to help families experiencing food insecurity."
