Sprints Better Than Endurance-Type Exercise, Studies Suggest

Reports indicate that shorter, more intense methods are not only more time-efficient, but may also be better for you.

A slew of recently published research studies have concluded that long endurance-type exercise is unnecessary for health and fitness. The reports also indicate that shorter, more intense methods are not only more time-efficient, but may also be better for you.

"We recommend lots of regular activity and plenty of walking," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH)and the newly released, The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012). "We also highly suggest incorporating sprints into your walk. Walking is the best activity for fat burning; we've been doing it for millennia, and it's our most natural form of locomotion. We probably never ran much for long periods at slow speeds during our evolution. However, our days likely involved lots of walking, along with infrequent periods of strenuous activity such as sprinting. Just imagine having to chase down or run away from some wild beast. These are the kind of activities we evolved doing and these same activities are what we are best adapted for and thrive on."

"Sprinting never lasts long," adds Dian. "It taxes our bones, muscles and physiology to the max. Take a look at a sprinter's body compared to a marathoner's, and decide which looks healthier. Sprinters usually have more muscle mass and better overall definition. Their hearts are actually larger and stronger too because they regularly experience a fuller range of stress."

"Even if you have the time for long runs or other traditional aerobic activities, regular walking combined with occasional sprints is still better, because it's not as stressful on your body," says Tom. "This formula eliminates unnecessary stress on knees and hips associated with endurance training. It also builds bone mass more efficiently. It is our most natural and healthy form of exercise because it mimics the regular activity pattern of our ancestors."
