Local Volunteers Shave Heads to Support Childhood Cancer Research
St. Baldrick's Foundation event at Westlake restaurant to raise money for lifesaving research
The St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at the Whistlestop Restaurant in Westlake, Ohio on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 2pm-6pm, where more than 20 have signed up to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer! With a goal of 60 shavees & $60,000 raised, the event organizers are currently looking for participants and donors.
A St. Baldrick's event has been held in Cleveland, Ohio for over a decade at A.J. Rocco's in downtown Cleveland. Kyle and Jim McPhillips, in their sixth year, and Mike Johnston, in his fourth year, decided to host an event on the west side to rally the community and raise awareness for St. Baldrick's. Kyle, an 8th grader at Bay Middle School has already recruited many friends from school. The Whistlestop Restaurant owners, recently touched by cancer of a close friend, graciously stepped up to host the event.
The event will be emceed by Jimmy Malone, co-host of the Lanigan & Malone morning show on Majic 105.7 from 2pm-4pm, and Bay Village City Councilman Dwight Clark from 4pm-6pm.
Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick's Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

About the St. Baldrick's Foundation
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St. Baldrick's has awarded more than $101 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick's funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, which may be a child's best hope for a cure.
