Startup Purple offers on-demand fuel service

Customers order fuel through app, avoid gas stations

"Getting to a gas station can be a hassle, especially during rush hour or during bad weather," Purple co-founded Bruno Uzzan said. "We want to offer a convenient, alternative way to get gas, requiring just a few taps on a user's phone."

A new startup, Purple, allows customers to use a smartphone app to order on-demand fueling service in Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange County and Seattle.

“Getting to a gas station can be a hassle, especially during rush hour or during bad weather,” Purple co-founded Bruno Uzzan said. “We want to offer a convenient, alternative way to get gas, requiring just a few taps on a user’s phone.”

Once the fuel is ordered, Purple service providers come to the vehicle's location to fill the fuel tank with no need for the customer to be present. Users can choose either a one-hour window for a small fee or a three hours window at no charge. Both 91 or 87 octane fuel is available, with 10 and 15 gallon quantities available.

The service, which launched in April 2015 in Los Angeles and has expanded to cover other areas, allows users to have their vehicle re-fueled while at work, or taking care of something else. Having that option frees up an average of 15 minutes a day, Uzzan said.

“With the technology available now, it’s becoming possible to make even mundane tasks like refueling a vehicle easy for users,” he said. “Using Purple lets them worry about other things, because we take care of getting their gas.”

The app uses geolocation to match users with nearby gas or service stations that participate in the program. The only fee Purple charges is when users request a one-hour window for delivery, and the prices for fuel are in line with the area average.

Purple was co-founded by JP Hubschman and Bruno Uzzan, a seasoned entrepreneur who served as CEO and founder of Total Immersion, a worldwide leader in Augmented Reality Technology.

Uber co-founder Oscar Salazar is an early investor in Purple.
