Gateway Gallery Auction's Winter Americana Estate Auction, held on February 19, 2011, featured a wonderful collection of period furniture, textiles, prints, pottery and ceramics, dolls and Native Americana from a local Doctor's estate. After a bustling week of pre-auction activity; the sale got underway with a strong in house crowd, a large amount of absentee bids, packed phone lines, and bidders from 22 different states as well as Canada and New Zealand.

The highest selling lot of the day was an early yellow sponge decorated sugar bowl (lot #267) which realized $8,250. The bowl caused fevered bidding between in house and phone bidders; as Auctioneer John Kohler, Jr. called out "sold to the phone" a spontaneous round of applause broke out.

A set of Staffordshire porcelain figurines of the Seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn, lot #168) circa 1820 were hammered down for $3,630. These figurines were in beautiful condition and sold to a floor bidder.

The Estate had a nice collection of hunting and waterfowl prints; the Audubon, Booby Gannet, R.Havell 1834, plate CCVII full folio (lot #140) stood out at $1,760. Another popular print, the 1914 Ithaca Gun Co. wood duck print (lot #231) realized $220.00.

Dolls are ever popular among bidders and lot #131, a 22 inch, closed mouth, bisque head doll with leather arms, hands and feet was no exception bringing $3,080 at the auction.

Among the period furniture sold, a few standouts should be noted. Lot #433, an 18th Century pine painted hanging cabinet with raised panel door over one drawer and two drawers inside found a new home at $1,980. Similarly selling at $1,980 was a circa 1790-1810 cherry/mahogany serpentine drop front desk with dovetailed case and Ogee feet (lot #385). A set of (9) sabre leg dining chairs circa 1830 sold for $2,750 (lot #293). A beautiful, period Duncan-Phyfe mahogany double pedestal 12 ft. extension table & boards (lot #288) realized $4,510. Attributed to Middleburg, VA a circa 1830-1840 Sheraton sideboard with reeded foot serving leaves on each side and brass rail with gallery (lot #373) sold for $2,090.

Other popular items among the bidders were lot #377, the large size Luxury Coffee Box, C.F. Ware Coffee Company, Dayton Ohio selling for $1,540; a pair of early cast iron andirons (American Indian man and woman, lot #194) also selling for $1,540; a beautiful large Baltimore album quilt (lot #189) which clearly had been loved and used by the family, sold for $2,310; a miniature John Bell yellow-ware mold (lot #186) realized $1,760 and an American Indian basket sold for $1,320.
