STS Construction Completes San Diego Kitchen Remodel

Historic Golden Hills home restored to original beauty by kitchen remodeling contractor.

STS Construction recently completed top-to-bottom restoration of a kitchen in a historic San Diego home. The house, located in San Diego's beautiful Golden Hill neighborhood, chose STS Construction for its reputation as a respected remodeling company.

The owner's goal, according to STS Construction's Steve Seligmann, was to completely remodel the kitchen without losing its historic feel. The challenge for STS Construction was that the home was very attractive but needed quite a bit of work. The existing cabinetry and floors were in need of significant repair and the homeowner wanted to salvage as much of the original structure as possible.

"Clearly, this home was historic and beautiful, but needed some quality work to bring it back to life," Seligmann says.

While the existing cabinetry was still functional, STS Construction noticed it needed a fresh coat of paint. That brought another challenge. Because the homeowner wanted to add to the storage capacity of the kitchen's cabinets, STS Construction was tasked with matching new cabinetry to the historic cabinets in the home. By constructing new custom-made cabinets for the Golden Hills home, STS Construction was able to create an appealing design for the kitchen's cabinetry while significantly increasing storage space for the family.

Another requested upgrade for the property in Golden Hills was a replacement to the kitchen's discolored sink. The home featured a drop-in sink that was both dated in its style and worn from decades of use. Because the sink base was shaped for that particular sink, STS Construction had to modify the base to accommodate today's sink sizes. Once the modification was complete, the remodeling services company dropped in a more contemporary "cottage"-style sink, along with a modernized fixture.

To add lighting and enhance the overall mood of the kitchen, STS Construction also installed pennant lights. These drop-down lights also added ornamentation to the kitchen, catching the eye of anyone who enters the room. Further increasing the functionality of the counter space in the kitchen, STS Construction installed electrical outlets to the backsplash. This upgraded the kitchen to make it more accommodating to today's many appliances.

Today's kitchens use each square inch of countertop for workspace. To accomplish this, STS Construction installed granite countertops, fabricated to match the existing cabinet bases. The tile backsplash that was installed coordinated perfectly with these new countertops.

Once the cabinetry was complete, STS Construction began work on replacing the historic home's aging floor. Over time, the original hardwood floors had begun to show signs of wear, with many soft spots and nails poking through. The original wood also bore a finish that was thirty years old. Determining that this original wood could not be saved, STS Construction began the work of replacing the original hardwood with new wood flooring that would complement the kitchen's new design. While STS Construction was working, the company also built up the subfloor where it was needed and installed new baseboards.

Historic homes present quite a few challenges, but STS Construction (http://www.stsconstruction.com) believes in maintaining the integrity of the original structure, while modernizing homes with the convenient amenities seen in today's new homes.
