Student Cyber Safety - House Committee on Education And Dr. Phil Target The Issue Of Cyber Bullying

Washington, DC - Today the House Committee on Education and Labor held a Hearing on Cyber Safety. The hearing was organized as a fact gathering session as the ESEA (Elementary Secondary Education Act) takes shape. Today's House Committee meeting also featured Dr. Phillip C. McGraw PHD who provided expert testimony on the damage caused by Cyber Bullying.

Cyber Bullying has taken center stage again as the alleged attackers will soon stand trial in the case of Phoebe Prince, (the Massachusetts teenager who, after being harassed, mistreated and then cyber-bullied for three months by a group of other girls, hanged herself in a bedroom closet).

During Dr. Phil's expert witness testimony he went into details of how cyber bullying is an increasingly threatening epidemic, and a leading cause of suicide amongst teens who fall victim.

"We must change our sensitivities, our policies and our training protocols so we do not let the victims of today's "keyboard bullies" fall through the cracks. That is why I am here today to suggest you add language to address cyber-bullying to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. A cyber bully in 2010 has the weapons to cause pain and suffering to victims that no other generation has had to cope with."

Tyronne Jacques CEO of Remove It Now.com (www.remveitnow.com) says the that the cyber bullying issue has to get addressed from three variables, (A) The Victim of Cyber Bulling (B) The Cyber Bully (C) The Parents of the Cyber Bully.

"I find that the parents of kids who are not being bullied seem to show no interest in the subject until they are directly affected. As a parent, even I had to address my daughter and her friends for isolating one little girl based on the clothes she wore to school. Your child may very well be in the IN crowd today, but tomorrow it could be you calling us to remove insidious comments posted online about your daughter."
