Students Like Cheap Laptops to TV

Online, August 1, 2013 (Newswire.com) - According to recent figures, students prefer to take cheap laptops to university rather than a TV. A poll of 1,700 students compiled by insurance company Endsleigh and the figures show that these same students are less likely to take a games console, separate stereo, or TV but are increasingly likely to take a cheap laptop or smartphone. The benefit of laptops is that they enable students to do everything from watch TV and movies to play games, and also to read and digest textbook information.

A separate TV, stereo, games console, and laptop not only means spending a considerable amount of money on electronics and electrics but it also means having to invest a lot of space both moving and storing the devices. Endsleigh polled 1,700 students about the devices that they take to university with them and found that only 20% now take a TV. This represents a drop of 17% on the previous year while 17% of students that take a separate studio indicates a 22% downward shift in this area. Only 12% take a separate games console which is a reduction of 24%. In contrast, 96% of students take a laptop and 90% have a smartphone - an increase of 80% on 2012 figures.

The survey also found that students now take an average of around £2,266 of consumer devices with them. In terms of the content that they use, an average student has £715 worth of digital music and £200 of online journals and texbooks, showing a significant move from paper print and CD over to the convenience of downloadable and cloud based content. These figures have been further improved by the advent of devices like the iPad and alternatives.

Despite its reasonably high price tag, 1 in 4 students have an iPad, which is a 147% increase when compared to last year. However, it is the laptop that remains the most popular means of computing for both personal and educational use and the proliferation of high quality, cheap laptops has almost certainly helped fuel this change in student habits.
