Students Of BBD College Lucknow Design A First-of-its-kind Intelligent Wireless Display

• A circuit with over 24000 components on 440 breadboards will be used to develop an Intelligent Wireless Display of 16500 LEDs - a global first • Participation from over 850 students

Lucknow: The BBD Group of Educational Institutions (BBDGEI), pioneers in technical and management education in the Lucknow region, today put on show a first of its kind Intelligent Wireless Display, the biggest such display board ever to be developed. This was part of 'Embedded Robotics Paradigm', held in association with PurpleLeap, a Pearson-Educomp company and a pioneer in entry level talent management. The programme aimed to create awareness among students about Embedded Systems and its potential in technical education.

The Intelligent Wireless Display constituted 220 Microcontrollers, 220 Crystals, 1320 Capacitors, 3080 Resistors, 1100 Transistors, 220 Buzzers, 660 Integrated Circuits, 220 RF Modules, 220 Seven Segments and 16720 LED's. A group of 4 students worked to build a single 'pixel', to be combined with pixels from other similar groups to form the single large display board. Unlike conventional display boards seen in stadiums or railway stations, every individual pixel in this display can be controlled in a centralized as well as decentralized manner - either by a personal computer, mobile, music or internet. This display can be used as an Electronic Notice Board, a Gaming Device, and a real time clock or as a configuration platform at hardware and software level for further research.

Hon. Vice Chancellor BBD University Prof. (Dr) A.K. Mittal said, "We are proud of the achievement of our students. Through this programme we wanted to create awareness among our students about the world of embedded systems and intelligent machines, while also spurring them to come up with their own ideas and innovations. Previously our students had also worked on a 'Smart Township' Robotic exhibition where 1872 electronic devices were controlled by a single mobile phone. Working with partners like PurpleLeap, helps institutions like ours bring such specialized streams to the large talent pool that exists in cities like Lucknow."

Mr. Amit Bansal, CEO and Founder of PurpleLeap said, "We congratulate the students of BBD College on this grand show. Embedded systems as a sector, will present huge employment opportunities in the coming years. At the same time, there exists a significant gap between the knowledge and skills levels that is needed and what currently prevails among students. We are trying to bridge this gap and equip students with the required training in a field that is increasingly attracting eye-balls the world over. This is another step in our efforts to enhance the potential of engineering talent in India."
The exhibition showcased the basics of how intelligent machines are made and provided guidance and understanding for beginners. The students of BBDGEI used the display during a play in which the senior students showed their juniors the various electrical components that are included in an engineer's everyday life. The students used white, green, blue and orange LED lights to create the intelligent display. Each group of students used two Breadboards to develop the entire circuit of a Wireless Display module. The other components of each module were a Power supply circuit, Microcontroller circuit, RF circuit, LED Driver Circuit and LEDs of 4 colors.

In the consumer segment alone there are 2 billion embedded devices expected to hit the market every year. Embedded system engineers get to work on technology that touches the life of the common man, like washers, cars, dryers, etc. Companies that specialize in building embedded systems for controlling railway signals, mills, petrochemical plants, pharmaceutical factories, bottling plants, etc. will also looking to hire embedded systems engineers. Embedded systems are also used in monitors, scanners; machines used for chemotherapy, diagnostic equipment's, pacemakers, ventilators, etc.
