Studies Indicate Diet Supplements Inadequate to Maintain Health

Recent studies suggest that vitamins, minerals and other supplements do not help prevent acute or chronic disease and do not increase longevity.

Recent studies from the University of Minnesota and Oregon State University suggest that vitamins, minerals and other supplements do not help prevent acute or chronic disease and do not increase longevity. Other studies show that supplement use may even be harmful, with none showing any reduction in risk of death even as several have shown an increase in cancer risk.

"A diet that avoids all processed 'fake' foods and consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, eggs and other quality animal-based protein provides all the nutrients required for optimal health," boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and the newly released, The Turbocharged Mind (January 2012 BSH). "Organic produce and organic pasture raised animal choices are even better."

"Every time a study finds the benefits of a food, the rush is on to isolate the beneficial compound and turn it into a profitable supplement or drug," says Dian. "Time after time, studies show that eating the original food as delivered by Mother Nature is far superior in producing the beneficial results. We humans have out survived many other species over many centuries by eating the foods we are best suited for in their natural state. There were no supplements and we did just fine."

"Everyone seems to be looking for the fountain of youth in a pill form that will allow them to eat and drink things that are bad for us without consequence," adds Tom. "It's not going to happen. If you think these supplements will make you live longer, forget it! All the evidence points to the folly of this approach. Many of the better-known longevity pioneers who were known for taking mega-doses of cutting edge supplements are now dead. The traditional use of a one-a-day vitamin 'for insurance' against deficiencies doesn't stand up."
