Even with this peace of mind, a few tips for a successful road trip are always welcome. Checking car essentials like oil, water, washer fluid and tire pressure should be considered mandatory before departure. A well-planned grocery shopping trip can cut costs of eating out and reduce travel time by reducing the need to stop for food. When eating out is necessary or desirable, avoid chains and corporate restaurants — try to find where locals eat. Instead of making hard plans concerning destinations, plan points on the road where a fresh decision about the next move can be made. Don’t wait too late in the day to arrange lodging and make sure to bring enough water. Travelers should keep loved ones periodically updated on their location, but also put the phone down as much as possible. Try to find older roads instead of highways. Log the minutes of the trip or keep a journal.
