Sundaram Clayton Wins Platinum In Economic Times - Frost & Sullivan Manufacturing Excellence Awards

Sundaram-Clayton, one of the large automotive component manufacturing groups in the country has won yet another accolade. Implementation of state-of-the-art technologies driven by comprehensive TQM (Total Quality Management), TPM (Total Plant Maintenance) and lean practices has enabled Sundaram Clayton Limited to emerge as a preferred solution provider in the automotive component space.

In 1998, Sundaram-Clayton, Brakes Division, won the "Deming Application Prize" becoming the first in India and only the fourth company outside Japan to receive this honour. In 2002, the company went on to win the Japan Quality Medal, awarded by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), Japan thereby becoming the first company in India and the second outside Japan to win this distinction. Later, the company became WABCO-TVS.

This year, Sundaram-Clayton, Die Casting Division, has been further awarded the prestigious Platinum Distinction in the Indian Manufacturing Excellence Awards (IMEA). These unique awards are India's largest and are based on a very rigorous onsite assessment of manufacturing practices benchmarked against global standards. Judges specifically look for diligence, perseverance, foresight and dedication to sustain successful lean manufacturing and continuous learning.

Accepting the award, Mr. C N Prasad, Group President & CEO said "The culture of continuous improvement, active participation of all employees in improvement activities, goal congruence at all levels in the organization and top management's commitment toward manufacturing excellence are some of the critical success factors that led to this achievement. This platinum distinction award exemplifies the consistency of Sundaram-Clayton Limited being conferred with the Indian Manufacturing Excellence Awards since 2007.

Background of IEMA

The Indian Manufacturing Excellence Awards were conceptualized and instituted by Frost & Sullivan in 2004 to recognise companies that made significant progress in their journey towards achieving a competitive position through manufacturing excellence. IMEA has a robust, highly acclaimed and constantly updated assessment process in place derived from the best global manufacturing practices. The assessment process for this award involves critical evaluation of the company's manufacturing practices, customer-orientation and leadership under 12 heads by a group of expert examiners.
