[Brazil being one of the largest country in South America has one of the most dynamic rail markets in the world. Rail transport in Brazil has been majorly about freight transport with people mostly preferring air travel. It is often said that the progress of the region has been marred with the lack of infrastructure in the region. Over the years, this has impacted the trade and investment opportunities. There has been considerable amount of development after 2000 with projects like expansion of Panama Canal and Brazilian High Speed Line from Rio de Janeiro to Campinas. These changes have attracted the attention of a lot of private players - local as well as international.

In 2003, the Ministry of Transportation rolled out a programme; National Plan for Logistics and Transportation (PNLT) keeping in mind the need for investments for developments from public and private firms alike. The launch of the Logistics Investment Program - Roadways and Railways, was recently announced by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. This plan is expected to garner investments upto (US$ 66.5 billion) to foster developments in the Brazilian rail and road sector through public private partnerships.
