Syphan Urges MSPs to Review Their Network Security in the Wake of the Amazon DDoS Outage

The DDoS attack, which resulted in a 16-hour non-availability of Bitbucket's open source data storage service, was initially blamed on the fact that the EBS is a shared service and that customers have to expect performance fluctuations, before admitting that the Amazon infrastructure had been taken down by a massive UDP flood.
The Syphan ITC220, launched to critical acclaim at this year's RSA Conference, is the first network security service platform capable of L7, total-packet inspection at speeds of 10 Gb/sec and supporting up to 500 managed service clients in a single appliance. Based on FPGA chip technology and using patent-pending parallel processing techniques, the ITC offers the full range of security services including DDoS mitigation, IPS, Firewall and DLP all at 10G, without latency.
"Any service provider who wants to be a serious player in the Cloud sector has to be able to be able to support a large client base and be able to process high volumes of traffic at high speed to make it a scalable and sustainable business," commented Pravin Mirchandani, CEO at Syphan. "This means guaranteed performance and access to a menu of security services regardless of the number of clients using the system at any one time. We can deliver everything the MSP needs in one box, which not only means a low cost of entry to the market but a rapid return on investment for the company. In the case of Amazon, the ITC220 can be configured to mitigate individual customers from DDoS attacks such as the UDP flood their client experienced."
The Syphan DDoS mitigation model combines hybrid rules and behaviour-based detection algorithms, employing the most useful elements of firewall, filtering and IPS systems as a first line of defence and adding the various counter-measures including adaptive blacklists, reputation scoring and dynamic profiling to ensure the delivery of state-of-the-art DDoS detection and mitigation, all at true 10G throughput speeds. With this technology placed in line on the MSP's Internet ingress points any UDP attack would be automatically blocked before it reached the critical servers and enable customers to continue to access their in-the-cloud services.
