Tackling Dyslexia in Dubai and the Middle East
Lexicon Reading Center answers the call of parents and teachers who deal with children suffering from learning disabilities, in Dubai and the Middle East.
Online, January 15, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Dyslexia is diagnosed in people of all levels of intelligence. Children suffer more than others because of parental and education pressures. Fortunately, special learning centers can help manage this problem. And one of the first of its kind institutions in the Middle East, Lexicon Reading Center, Dubai does exactly this.
What exactly is dyslexia? Is it as complicated as it sounds? Not really. It is a term not known to many.
Dyslexia is a learning disability which generally shows symptoms of having difficulty reading, writing and spelling words. Many people are ignorant and assume that dyslexia is synonymous with being mentally retarded, which is totally incorrect.
It is a common misconception that children having learning disabilities are termed as retards.
These kids are pressured by parents, teachers and society. This invariably dents in the child's self confidence. The upshot: such children have a hard time in school reading, writing and spelling words. They can't cope up with the speed at which they are taught. They lag behind at homework and schoolwork.
Dyslexia is thought to be the result of a neurological defect and is diagnosed in people of all levels of intelligence. It cannot be cured but it can be worked upon and managed.
It is estimated that dyslexia affects between 5% to 17% of the U.S. population. Of people with poor reading skills, 70-80% are likely dyslexic. Therefore it has become a matter of high priority, to throw light on such an important subject.
According to Rania Anis, who started Lexicon Reading Center: "As the mother of a child with learning disability, I have first hand experience of what mothers go through, in managing children with dyslexia. Couple that with a serious lack of good training facilities for children, teachers and parents, not just in Dubai but all of the Middle East. It's precisely because of these issues that I decided to start a special training institution for children with learning disabilities here in Dubai".
Elizabeth Barret Browning once famously said: "What is genius but the power of expressing a new individuality?"
Lexicon Reading Center [http://dubaidyslexia.com] endorses this principle, as it focuses on helping individuals who learn differently, understand their learning styles and utilize their potential abilities and talents to achieve success, not only in their academic performance but in their overall life. The center is run by qualified professionals with extensive experience in assessing and educating children with learning disabilities using research-based methodologies.
The medium of instruction in public schools, in Dubai, is Arabic with emphasis on English as a second language, while most of the private schools use English as their medium of instruction.
As dyslexia is more apparent in non-transparent languages like English, Lexicon Reading Center is indeed a making a mark towards initiating a change in attitude, to help these special children.
It [http://lexiconreadingcenter.org] also has services for parents, teachers of children with learning disabilities as well as society, to help guide these young minds in their academic endeavors successfully.
With many issues surrounding education of dyslexic children, Lexicon Reading Center is definitely a big step in the Middle East, to make people aware of the situation and take the initiative to manage it.
