Tea Consumption Found to Be Beneficial for Older Drinkers

A recent study by Duke University researchers showed a beneficial effect for tea consumption for older individuals residing in China.

Data were analyzed from 13,429 men and 19,177 women aged 65 years and older who participated in the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey. Interviews of participants provided data on the frequency of tea consumption. Tea drinking was then categorized as daily or almost daily, sometimes (two to four times per week), or seldom or never.

From the first group enrolled from 1998 to 2005, 4,833 men and 7,551 women died. Men aged 65 to 84 years who reported drinking two to four cups of tea per week had a 19 percent lower risk of dying during that time period when compared with men who seldom drank the beverage. Daily or almost daily tea consumption resulted in a 12 to 23 percent lower risk. Drinking tea daily or almost daily reduced the risk of death among men 85 and older significantly; less frequent tea drinking did not. Tea intake did not appear to have the same effect on mortality among women. However, both men and women who consumed tea daily or almost daily had less risk of poor health compared with seldom drinkers.

"Tea contains numerous compounds that seem to have a beneficial effect on our physiology," say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). "This includes all kinds of tea; black, green and even herb. Adding tea to our daily schedules is a simple and enjoyable way to improve long-term health."
