Texas State Historical Association 2010 Live and Silent Auction

Live Auction of Historic Art, Maps, Documents, and Books Highlights the Texas State Historical Association's Annual Meeting.

The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) will feature a Live Auction, forty-one sessions devoted to all facets of Texas history, and a Silent Auction at its 114th Annual Meeting on March 4 - 6, 2010 at the Marriott Quorum Hotel in Dallas, Texas. With items culled from noteworthy collections and gathered from contributors across the state, the Live Auction will start at 5 p.m. on March 5 with J. P. Bryan of Houston as auctioneer.
Auction items range from rare Texas paintings to inscribed first editions by notable Texas authors to significant documents and maps. Five unique excursions--with two destinations on vast West Texas ranches and one to the Burgundy region of France--will also be on the auction block.
Among the artworks included is one of the earliest and finest examples of pre-Civil War Early Texas Art still in private hands. Guenther's Mill on Live Oak Creek, by Hermann Lungkwitz, was commissioned in 1855 by the mill's owner, Hilmar Guenther, and passed down in the Guenther family for the last 155 years. Also, a large number of rare books, maps and other collectibles will comprise the balance of Live Auction and Silent Auction items. Featured collections include those of H. Bailey Carroll, who served as director of the Association from 1946 to 1966 and of Al Lowman, a well-know book collector and longtime TSHA member Additional books, tours, and Texana will round out the items available in the Silent Auction, which will conclude at 5:00 pm on Friday, March 5, just before the Live Auction begins.

The program includes sessions with the Texas Oral History Association, the Texas Folklore Society, the Society of Southwest Archivists, the Texas Catholic Historical Society, the Texas Baptist Historical Society, and the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society. Also scheduled are the Handbook of Texas workshop and the Quarterly and publications workshops.
