The Center for Digestive Medicine Explains Which Symptoms Require a Visit to the Gastroenterologist

The Center for Digestive Medicine explains that many conditions can create symptoms that necessitate a visit to a gastroenterologist. Chronic pain is an indicator that something is wrong; symptoms may include bloating, gas, diarrhea, or others. A gastroenterologist is a specialist that treats diseases of the digestive tract (which comprises the esophagus, stomach, colon, pancreas, and liver). If someone is experiencing difficulty with their digestive function then it is important for them to visit a gastroenterologist.

Here are a few of the symptoms that a gastroenterologist can help treat:

Gallstones

Gallstones can be the culprit if an individual is experiencing significant pain. They are the hardened buildup of the digestive fluid that breaks down food. Sometimes the pain can last hours, but most report that the pain can come on acutely and abruptly.

Heartburn

Heartburn is often experienced as chest pain or as a burning sensation in the chest or throat. Heartburn is the result of the build-up of stomach acid which backs up into the esophagus. Heartburn can be easily dispelled by over-the-counter medication, and some people may experience it occasionally. However, if heartburn occurs more regularly, it could be a sign of Gastroesophageal reflux disease "GERD," or acid reflux. In the case of GERD, stronger medications may be necessary to manage the condition.

Diarrhea

The opposite of constipation, diarrhea is having too many bowel actions that aren't solid. This, too, can signify issues with digestion. Those with diarrhea may experience cramps in their stomach or have watery stools when they use the restroom. Although common, those that experience frequent diarrhea could have a more serious underlying disorder, like Irritable Bowel Syndrome or "IBS."
