Online, December 6, 2024 (Newswire.com) - The Marcus Garvey Institute for Human Development (MGI), founded and chaired by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey's sole surviving son, Dr. Julius Garvey, and the Center for Global Africa, USA, founded and chaired by Professor Ezrah Aharone, author, scholar of sovereign studies and public diplomat, are pleased to announce the launch of the Garvey Legacy Campaign. This momentous campaign will support exoneration efforts as a new groundswell movement for Garvey's posthumous pardon continues to grow.
The new book, Justice for Marcus Garvey: Look for Me in the Whirlwind (released by Broadleaf Books; November 19, 2024), is a collection of informative essays and personal narratives about Marcus Garvey's life and work, demonstrating his essential influence on current social justice movements. Edited by Dr. Julius Garvey, it features a foreword by bestselling author Ta-Nehisi Coates, alongside contributions from prominent figures such as Paul Coates, founder and director of Black Classic Press; Goulda Downer, president of the Caribbean-American Political Action Committee (C-PAC); Justin Hansford, professor at Howard University School of Law; and Maulana Karenga, creator of Kwanzaa.
"We are so proud to launch this incredibly important campaign to exonerate my father's name," said Dr. Julius Garvey. "In the words of my father himself, ‘We must liberate the minds of men, and ultimately you'll free the bodies of men.'"
Also to coincide with the launch of the campaign, The Center for Global Africa in partnership with Marcus Garvey Institute is set to release the new short film, The Garvey Legacy Film. The short documentary is scheduled for release on December 26, 2024, the film trailer provides a highlight of the film which tells the story of the exoneration efforts led by attorneys, officials, organizations, community activists and Pan-African leaders worldwide, with special appeal from Delaware Leaders. US Presidents and Congressional members have not rectified this injustice.
A faith-based kick-off forum will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024 @ 11 am - 12:00 noon at Bethel AME Church, 604 N. Walnut Street, Wilmington, Delaware to launch the campaign and call attention to the exoneration application.
"As America is now looking inward to assess itself as a multiracial democracy, a great focus should center on reparative justice for Marcus Garvey persecution and the resulting interruption of African American progress," says Ezrah Aharone. "This is especially true since the government is also actively re-prioritizing its Africa policies and positions to become more globally competitive as evidenced by Power Africa and the President's Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement. So Garvey should be pardoned, and the standards he set should be recognized and linked to 21st-century Africa-Diaspora engagements."
Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, which had a following of more than six million African descended people worldwide. Despite his massive popularity, this Jamaican born international leader was wrongfully sentenced to prison by the U.S. government.
While exoneration efforts began immediately and have continued since his sentencing, a new groundswell movement for Garvey's posthumous pardon is underway, and The Garvey Legacy Film and Justice for Marcus Garvey serves as a tribute and rallying cry for one of the preeminent champions of Black pride and self-determination.
Dr. Julius Garvey and Professor Ezrah Aharone will also embark on a speaking tour in 2025. For additional information, please visit www.centerforglobalafrica.com and www.legacymovementfilm.com.
