The Historic Detroit Yacht Club Named Presenting Sponsor Of The 2011 Detroit APBA Hold Cup Races

Hydroplane Racing Action Scheduled for July 8 - 10 on the Detroit River/Event Fundraiser Set for May 6 at Detroit Yacht Club

The Detroit Yacht Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in North America, has been named the Presenting Sponsor of the 2011 Detroit APBA Gold Cup Races, scheduled to take place July 8 - 10 on the Detroit River. The announcement was made by the Detroit River Regatta Association (DRRA), host organization for the race and representatives from the Detroit Yacht Club.

As Presenting Sponsor, the Detroit Yacht Club will lead the fundraising efforts for the event in July, including seeking businesses, individuals and clubs to help preserve one of the oldest, ongoing events in the city.

"This is a tremendous honor for the Detroit Yacht Club to team up with the DRRA in such a special, uniquely Detroit event," said Dr. A.J. Telmos, Commodore, Detroit Yacht Club. "Just like the DYC, the Gold Cup Races have a long history with Detroit and southeast Michigan."

The Gold Cup is considered the oldest contested motorsports trophy in the world, with Detroit hosting the longest running, yearly hydroplane race in the world. The race will take place Friday, July 8 through Sunday, July 10 at the Detroit River racecourse, an oval course just north of the Belle Isle Bridge and considered the most famous powerboat racecourse in the world.

Additionally, the Detroit Yacht Club is hosting a fundraising dinner party and silent auction to benefit the 2011 APBA Detroit Gold Cup Races on Friday, May 6. The event is open to the public and any other private club member. For tickets or more information, contact the Detroit Yacht Club at 313-824-1200 or email [email protected]

"The May 6 fundraiser is an investment in Detroit's riverfront community and will help keep the tradition of hydroplane racing alive on the Detroit River," said Tom Bertolini, President, DRRA. "The economic climate remains challenging and we are counting on the generosity of the people of Detroit and southeast Michigan to support a 107-year-old tradition which this year will feature the popular turbine powered unlimited hydroplane class along with more automotive powered boats."

The three-day event will feature a "free Friday" with no admission charge. In addition to the unlimited hydroplanes, vintage race boats, superlight tunnel boats and offshore race boats will be featured. The U.S. Navy's West Coast Super Hornet Demo Team will be returning this year, performing flight demonstrations with one of the Armed Forces' most impressive aircraft, the FA-18.

"This year's Gold Cup will feature an outstanding race line up and a host of other activities," added Telmos. "We encourage everyone to attend this family friendly event along Detroit's beautiful riverfront and support more than a century of racing tradition."
