The Indian Power System

Power is one of the most important aspects of the infrastructural development and growth of any economy. Be it agriculture, commerce and industry, or trade and service sectors, all need power for their respective growth. The Indian power system is one of the fifth largest and the most complex one. India, one of the fast growing economies in the world, also stands third in electricity production, with the electricity demand expected to touch approx. 1900 billion units by 2020.

In order to meet the increasing energy demand, the Governemnt of India has set ambitious and aggressive goals like 24X7 Power to all households by 2019. The government along with the policy makers, investors and thought leaders have chalked out various plans to meet the target, keeping in mind the environment and socio-economic implications. Thus renewable energy is now looked upon as an alternate source of energy to generate electricity.

The government recently launched the Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojna (UDAY), this scheme will ease the financial crunch of the distribution companies, improve the operational efficiencies, reduce cost of power, etc. This initiative is a response to certain challenges that the government faced like transmission capacity, power purchase agreement between IPP, power grid & distribution losses, fuel availability and the financial well-being of distribution companies. Almost 50 percent of power is lost during transmission & distribution. Thus, UDAY is a significant step in making Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of affordable and accessible 24X7 Power for all come true.
